The Dig :

"The Dig" is the first solo release for Larry Finn and myself. This was a project that we had been talking about for a long time. We are so used to playing on other peoples discs, that we thought it was time to do are own. On the disc I feel we were able to bring out our influences and compliment each other since we have very similar concepts on time and feel. I grew up listening to groups like Steely Dan, The Doobie Brothers, James Brown and Earth Wind & Fire. The influences of these bands are evident in our playing, but we were also able to bring out something more. A progressive blend of these styles and our jazz background blended together.

Our whole approach to this project was to keep the music live, fresh and unrehearsed. We didn't even rehearse our material with each other before going into the studio. We just brought the charts, played through them once or twice and rolled the tape. All the tracks were recorded in one or two takes, and no overdubs were done. I think we were able to capture a real feeling of "going for it". We did all the tracks in three nights.

Being professors at Berklee College gives us the advantage of playing with some of the finest players in the world. On the first session we did, we recorded Strollin', Baby Blues, Liquid Lettuce and Open Up. Kevin Barry ( Guitar, Paula Cole, Mary Chapin Carpenter) was off the road for a while, so we were able to hook up with him for this session. He was only able to make that one session before going back on the road, but he laid down some great stuff. We called another friend of ours, Duke Levine (Guitar, Mary Chapin Carpenter.) Duke played on the other session that we used guitar, and was just killin'. Bill Pierce, (Tony Williams, Stevie Wonder) Chairman of the Woodwind Department, played sax on the disc. Dave Limina,(Professor at Berklee College) played piano on all the cuts.

Larry and myself are always playing on sessions for other artists. We have started recording another project and should get some more of our own stuff out soon. I once again want to thank all of you who support independent artists like us. The response has been overwhelming.
