Top 5 :

How can you pick just five albums? I don't know, but this list will probably change every few weeks. I'm just going to put five albums that were important to me for different reasons. It's not important that they are albums with mind blowing bass playing. What is important is that there is depth and great musicianship in the songs. Here we go.

1. Donald Fagen - "The Nightfly"
Incredible production on this one. Fagen is a perfectionist and this album sounds better than stuff produced today. Every note on this album is perfect and put in the perfect spot. Great players playing great songs. I can't find anything I don't like about this album.

2. Michael McDonald - "Motown"
I usually don't like remakes of great songs. I always feel they are good enough. How can you improve on Marvin Gaye? Well Michael McDonald proves my theory wrong. He sings the songs with respect for the originals. At the same time he puts them to modern grooves. With a guy like Tom Barney playing bass, how can you go wrong? Go buy it and learn all the basslines.

3. The Temptations - "The Ultimate Collection"
You get all the good stuff on this disc. The CD covers a lot of years and I never get tired of putting it on. Every song is a hit. It always reminds me what I love about soul music. If this collection doesn't do anything for you, you might want to try playing kazoo.

4. Luther Vandross - "Any Love"
I love Luther because Marcus Miller is on everything and produces everything. He even writes a lot of his stuff. How can you go wrong. All the early Luther albums are great. Right up until the late 90's. There is something about this disc though. It probably reminds me of some fun times in my life, but besides that, there is just some great singing, playing and grooves.

5. Maxwell - "Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite"
I think Maxwell is the best modern Hip-Hop / R&B artist out right now. His tunes just set up a great vibe. He uses fantastic players and there is tons of depth to the grooves. I think he is a very underrated artist. I always seem to come back to his albums. I don't think a week goes buy where I don't listen to some of his stuff. It's a ritual for me to put on his albums when I'm flying home from gigs.
